Rubia tinctorum
This perennial plant is a traditional source of red dye, though it can create a wide range of shades from peach to orange to brick red. Combine with indigo dye to make purple or yellow dyes to create bright orange colors. It’s versatile and very colorfast!
The dye comes from the roots and it takes 2 - 3 years of growing before they’re large enough to dig up and use so start growing madder now!
Plants grow trailing vines with scratchy/sticky hairs and can be trellised. Full sun is ideal. These seedlings are in 4 inch pots.
